Playing Pieces

I was talking to someone about games and mentioned my old Monopoly game has wooden playing pieces, not the metal ones. She, being much younger than me, had never heard of such a thing. I love that old game. I loved playing Monopoly when I was growing up and I always preferred playing the tall, ivory colored piece. I told my acquaintance I would take a photo of the old playing pieces to show her, then figured, why not share them here, too, partly because they're cool and I wonder if anyone else knows or remembers them and partly because I haven't posted here in a while. So, here they are in all their glory.

Seriously? It's been a week since I posted here? Eek. I had no idea. Really. I've lost all track of time. Not only am I hooked on Facebook's Frontierville game (Zynga's newer, better than Farmville game), but I became obsessed with the newer Cityville game. I love moving things around in my virtual homesteads and cities and decorating.

It's been too cold to think or get out much other than go to work. And snow. We're having a very snowy winter so far. I'm ready for spring. Really. Very. Ready.

Memory Lane

I was reminded about an old toy and an old game today when I read about a store in NYC called Alphaville. I took a peek at their online offerings and found a couple of things that really took me back. I'd forgotten all about Lie Detector from Mattel. I loved the artwork on the suspect/witness cards. I did figure out how things worked, but that didn't detract from the fun.

The second item was a toy I remembered but haven't been able to remember the name of: Block City. I didn't know from Legos (I'm not even sure when those came out). I built houses with Block City. Not very versatile, but it kept me busy. This link will probably vanish once they sell the item.

Playing Games

So, I still have my visiting bad bacteria. Those suckers really do not want to leave or die. They sure are persistent.

Been playing a lot on Facebook. I've tried a number of games, and still enjoy the word games (Scramble, Word Twist, and especially, Scrabble), but I've really gotten addicted to Pet Society and now, Dragon Wars. I did try Yoville (hideous graphics! what were they thinking?) and Super Poke Pets (cute, but graphically, and interactively, not up to the standard Pet Society has established). Yes, this is how I've been spending way too much of my evenings on.

Way Cool

This TypeRacer site is a great way to practice your typing skills while playing a game. The faster you type (accurately), the faster your little car moves. You can practice on your own, or compete against others. Really makes me wish we'd had this when I was in school, back in 7th grade when we were required to take typing. Ah, the days of clunky, manual typewriters: The quick brown fox jumped over the... Great. Now I've forgotten what he jumped over. Anyway, this is much better and loads of fun. And on my first shot, I hit 64wpm, which is a lot faster than when I actually worked as a typist (I typed 35-50 words per minute back then). Then again, I was nowhere near the top scores of 120wpm-150+wpm. Found on Today on the Interwebs, which is a pretty nifty link blog.

Can't be Bored by Board Games

Now, I loved playing Chinese Checkers when I was a kid and still have the old game my parents had that I played with endlessly. I loved the sound of the marbles clicking against the metal playing surface. When I wasn't playing the game, I'd turn the board over and roll the marbles around the back, which had grooves. It was kinda like racing marbles.

I loved and still love Monopoly, Sorry, Scrabble, and Boggle, among others. But Chinese Checkers has a special place in my memory.

However, the description in the quiz results couldn't be more wrong. Oh well.

Boomshine

Here's a game I didn't need to know about: Boomshine. Annoyingly addictive. I think it's the music. Or the pretty colored dots that blow up into larger ones and pop when they're hit. At each level, you're told how many you need to pop by dropping a "bomb" in the midst somewhere to start the chain reaction. I gave up at level 12, which is supposedly the last level, with a score of 189. You do get to repeat a level til you achieve its goal. I couldn't get past level 12, damn it. I'll have The Presurfer to blame for this new addiction. ;)

Game Time

When I was a kid, I loved playing skee ball. We'd go to Rockaway Beach and after a bit of sun and splashing (I can't swim) in the Atlantic, we'd go up on the boardwalk, wandering in and out of the concessions. And the best were the games and skee ball was the best of the games, along with pinball. Now, thanks to Candy Addict, I can play Life Savers Skee Ball. Let's just say I play it as well as I played the real life version, not very. Fun, tho.

Void Where Prohibited

It was one of those days. You know the kind. Too long, can't end fast enough, you'd do it over except you're afraid it would be even worse.

And the day started with such promise. I was actually feeling good. Didn't even mind that I had to go back to work after a 3-day weekend. Lunchtime I was going to go to Barnes & Noble and get some new reference manuals for my software upgrades and it was supposed to be a beautiful day (it was, tho a bit windy) and I was thinking about a nice, long walk after work. But then, the little nagging things started.

I forgot something I wanted to bring to work. Fortunately, I remembered before I got on the elevator, so back to my apartment I went. Subway ride was fine, but I'd forgotten my fav place for breakfast is closed this week, so I had to find something to eat and not nearly as good. And when I got to work, there was a real reception for me. Not because they were glad to see me for me, but because they knew I had a key to the branch. I also know how to disarm the security alarm and get the lights on. Yes, the staff was huddled outside the door in the cold, waiting to be let in. Seems the substitute custodian was late and he was the one who was supposed to open up the branch.

So I ended up eating breakfast at 10 am, and wasn't hungry lunchtime, which was good, because I had to run an extra errand to try to replace a broken glass. I have a couple of glasses for 25 years and they're perfect. Short, fairly lightweight, wide opening, they hold a full glassful of liquid in a glass that looks like half a glass. I use them all the time, mostly to hold water and sit by the computer. They don't make glasses like that anymore. I haven't seen anything similar for many, many years. So I got a couple of heavy glasses that aren't nearly as sleek and elegant, then got my books and with no time to really get lunch, grabbed a chocolate milk from a deli and drank that while working at my desk.

We were short-staffed today, too, on a very busy day (it's always busy after we're closed for a 3-day weekend). The custodian left early apparently, so my boss and I had to lock up. And in between it all were petty annoyances that kept growing, including a broken nail down to the nailbed (tho it didn't break the skin, so no blood or risk of infection) while I was at the reference desk. I suppose the best thing today was seeing the nasty papercut (more like paper slice) from Sunday has finally healed. And I didn't tear any pantyhose.

Now, this probably doesn't sound all that bad, but that's because there are things I just don't blog about.

Game Time

Having lunch at my desk this dreary, rainy day and therefore, am websurfing. Boing Boing found some fun games for me, and now you, to play. I've listed my favs of the group.

• Bird Snatchers. Watch the instruction video, first. It's well worth a look.
• Bricks can easily become addicting, I think. Took me a while to figure it out, but you seem to need to stack up bricks of the same color before you run out of room to move. The first time, just feeling my way through it, I got to level 6 before getting crushed under the piling up bricks.
• This one is just wrong. Unless you can use an arrow key and a spacebar faster than I can or you like watching cows explode. Cow Panic!
• Mep Ball has a great intro and requires more dexterity than I possess. Lots of rules too, but fun.
• Curve Ball is some sort of weird paddle ball game.
• PandaGolf is also fun, but it took me a few moments to figure out where to click. I had to turn off the music; it was driving me nuts.
• Tonypa Games is sort of a variety pack. Some fun stuff here.
