Snowmageddon that Wasn't

So, it snowed. Not as much in NYC as predicted, but a lot, none the less. I do not understand how people panic and buy out grocery stores. In a place where you have to drive to the store, yeah, because driving would be dangerous, but in NYC when you can walk to a store? Also, do people really never have enough food to survive a day or two, tops? Because it doesn't take long here to get roads cleared and stores open. Ah well. We endure. Til next time.

Meanwhile, here are some tasty linkages.

Women fight back against street harassment in the best way possible in Lima, Peru.

I love these artistic signatures designed by Patrik Svensson. His Instagram account is here.

I love how someone took matters into their own hands to protest Islamophobic ads in San Francisco.

A nifty way for sighted people to help the blind.

I saw "The Imitation Game," which inspired me to read more about the real Bletchley Park codebreakers.

Some useful ways to find info when Google isn't enough.

How Much Snow?

The answer in a picture.

Snow Covered Cars
NYC got a lot of snow, but not nearly as much as Connecticut and parts of the rest of New England did.

Spring Has Been Postponed Until Further Notice

In honor of the predicted snowstorm for NYC on April Fool's Day -- and really, could we script this better? -- here's some weather humor.

A Facebook friend reposted this:
INSTALLING SPRING...████████░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░33% DONE........... Install delayed....please wait................. Installation failed. Please try again.

I responded with: http://www.spring.spring :
Page Not Found.
Yeah, it's been that kind of year. It will stop snowing and get warm, right? Right?

Feeling: worn out

Some Cool Blogs I Just Found Out About

Someone asked Joseph Mallozzi (a writer/producer of Stargate) what blogs he reads and he suggested some good ones. I really like The Hot Librarian, though there hasn't been a new post for over a month. One of her posts led me to a brief list of funny amateur blogs, which led me to this priceless bit of inanity: Ugly Outfits in New York. I've seen plenty that would qualify, but sadly, have never been able to get my camera out and snap the pic in time to either get a shot in focus or to avoid being seen by the subject and having either my camera or face broken, or perhaps both. People can be so sensitive about their fashion choices.

BTW, here are glimpses of the less glamorous side of snow in NYC. You'll note it warmed up a bit and has started to melt, leaving many Manhattan corners resembling mini frigid lakes.
Dec2011 072 E 14th Street

I had the day off for New Year's (yeah, it makes as much sense to me as it probably does to you), so I went to get my comics and on the train, had to listen to a group of tourists all armed with little guides to NYC. In the summer and during the holiday season, I especially hate the 49th Street stop on the Broadway line because there are a lot of hotels in that area and tourists flood the subway at that point. I had to listen to such comments as "Where's the business district?" "Check page 28." "I want to see the Empire State Building." "That's the other way. How about the Statue of Liberty?" "That's what I meant. The Statue of Liberty." "Where's Lincoln Center?" I came thisclose to grabbing the book out of the hands of the one I guessed was the mother and telling her Lincoln Center is the other way, in the W. 60s, and why didn't you bother figuring all this out before you got on the train? Instead, I reminded myself that tourists pump money into the city's economy by paying for hotels, food, and funny little souvenir hats.

I end this randomized post with a picture of some of the delicious petit fours a grateful library patron sends us every year for the holidays. My boss and I managed to eat most of them.

Snow Day

We had a blizzard here in NYC. We got a snow day from work: Yay! I spent most of it fixing up the den, listening to the radio, and playing Facebook games. (I need a life.)

I didn't take photos because the wind was blowing too much snow around and I didn't want to risk my camera getting wet. Maybe I'll get some shots tomorrow of the dirty, plowed mounds of snow.

Feeling: snowed in

Snowy Day Not a Snow Day

Picture 037
Nasty day. Lots of snow and lots of slush, and the library didn't close for this storm, but hardly any staff showed up, so it was a long day, too. And tomorrow will likely be a repeat. I'm too tired to come up with anything more entertaining or interesting. Just want to sleep.

Let it Snow Let it Snow Let it Snow

IMG_0596
Snow has arrived in NYC and it's been here all day. It's really gray out now, almost as dark as night. I had the day off, and would've liked to go out, but I feel like crap (again) and this weather isn't much fun. Not even to take pics. I did take a few through windows. Here we can see that Inflatable Santa was no match for the heavy wind and snowfall. Either that, or he'd hit the eggnog again.

Let it Snow

DT's First Day on the JobSnow came today and is still falling, but it will turn to rain tomorrow with warmer temps, so the snow will be gone by tomorrow night, for sure. We don't typically get a lot of snow in NYC, but this up and down with the temperature must be a global warning thing. Went to the gym, lost a pound from last week, don't know yet if it's real weight loss or normal fluctuations. Will need more weeks to see if I'm taking off weight.

Snow Snow Snow

I was going to go out today, which is my free day, but it's windy and blowing snowy, sleety, freezing rainy stuff out there, so I stayed home and have been taking photos. Here, Mal helps shovel the terrace.

View Through My Window

Well, it's still snowing. Supposed to be a couple of feet. Been falling 3 inches per hour for a while now. Of course, with temps due up to 50°F by mid-week, we're due for a lot of slush and icy water in a few days. Wouldn't mind a snow day tomorrow, but one never can tell with our library system. Probably won't know til the morning. The thing is, Manhattan is usually fine once the snow stops falling, because the plows are out in force. But the outer boroughs not only tend to get more snow, it takes longer to plow it. I have a small hill to navigate to the subway and it's very slick in weather like this. I don't like the idea of falling now that I know my bones are kinda brittle, so I wouldn't mind a day off so they can shovel and plow out there. Althought, I'd love to get out and take photos. Ah, the urges of a photoblogger!

White Christmas Rehearsal

White Christmas Rehearsal
Originally uploaded by ShellyS.
It snowed this morning. I wasn't cold when I took this, except for my gloveless hands. I wish I could manage to depress a camera shutter with gloves on, but I haven't managed to master that skill yet. It probably wasn't the best idea to go out, given I'm feeling like crap and stayed home sick, but I had to go down for the mail, anyway. I probably wasn't out more than 5 minutes.

This is in front of my apartment building. And the sun is out and the wind is howling. The shot was taken in shadow. More snow shots will be posted on Creative Endeavors.

Egads! Snow!

Without regard for the calendar, Winter moved into NYC last night, bringing snow with it. And along with sub-freezing temperatures all week, we're supposed to get a real storm tomorrow night into Tuesday. Oh joy. NOT.

I wouldn't mind the snow so much if the sun was out, glinting off the flakes, which makes for nice photos. But it's just gray and dreary out there. As usual, this is the view from the den window. I doubt I'll be getting sunset photos tonight.

Okay, here's a reason to get jazzed about stamp collecting. Via Boing Boing, we have the lineup for next year's US commemorative stamps, and DC Comics Superheroes are among the 2006 issues! Now I need to figure out how many sets I want. And yet, part of me is thinking, this has to be a trick or a hoax, because they wouldn't do something this cool. But then I remind myself that I just got the Muppets stamps, so yeah, maybe they really are. Will Marvel Comics be far behind, maybe for '07?

Here's a fun quiz: Programming Language Inventor or Serial Killer? I got 9 of 10 correct.

Feeling: Yeah, I redid them all last night (well, most of them, and added some). Older ones that needed borders got them, some got recolored, and some like this one got totally redone. And I made some new ones with Create Your Own Avatar. It's still one of the few sites I've found that lets you create expressive avatars and save them (which here you do by making screen caps).
