Avatar This!

You can make an avatar a la Scott Pilgrim, on the Scott Pilgrim Avatar Creator which is part of the publicity for the upcoming movie Scott Pilgrim vs the World. Here's what I came up with.
Other avatar creators: Meez, MyPictr (which seems to be a quick cropping site for your own photo), Gizmoz, My Avatar Editor (in the style of Nintendo's Mii characters), Simpsons Avatar (and a game, apparently), Zwinky, DoppelMe, and WeeWorld. I found these and more on an old Mashable post. At least one link I tried was dead.

I've used Meez, DoppelMe, and WeeWorld and they're cute. Meez is nice and I have one of my Meez avatars on my photoblog, Creative Endeavors.

Other goodies include this South Park avatar creator, South Park Studio, abi-station, eLouai Dollmakers, Hero Machine (I've used this for Shelly's Comic Book Shelf), Girls Inc., and Reasonably Clever (home of the Blockhead avatars, check out the Mini-Mizers dropdown menu on the top nav).

Avatar Yourself

 Another cool avatar site, this one based on Mad Men, which I don't watch, but it's a fun site: MadMenYourself. You can do face/head closeups and full scenes as above which make for fun wallpapers. That's me in the center.

List o' Links

Cardboard Sculptures by Chris Gilmour. They're truly amazing. Link found on Boing Boing.

Build Your Own Wild Self avatars for children and the child in the rest of us. Co-sponsored by the Bronx Zoo. As you can see, I have issues I need to work out. Found on Presurfer.

Tattoos for Blind People. This is a raised dot braille tattoo. Found on Neatorama.

Popups from old paperbacks. Nice. Found on Bill Crider's Pop Culture Magazine.

Lost Weekend

So far, I lost yesterday. Looks like I'm sick, first time in I can't remember how long. Stuffed, sore throat. Might be allergy, but I don't think so. Still feel out of sorts. Slept way too late today, so my meds schedule is off. I'll probably feel better when it's time to go to bed, as usually happens when I take my synthroid so late, which means I'll stay up too late and sleep too late tomorrow, which will screw up my schedule for trying to get up early on Tuesday to go back to work. feh.

Meanwhile, Generator Blog points us to a free avatar site, DoppelMe. The options apparently are better if you register. I didn't bother, so this is what I ended up with.

Take Meez Out to the Ballgame

I made a new Meez and actually paid $5 for the *coinz* to *buy* the Mets shirt. I am such a geek. Or is that dweeb. Or dork. Or just plain icon/avatar addict.

Simpsons Avatar

Since everyone seems to be doing this, I figured I'd be a sheep and make one, too. I'd made an icon at another Simpsons avatar site a while back, but don't recall the URL. Anyway, you can make one like this over at this site.

Home today, been cleaning. There's never any end to cleaning. Found my desk. Yay. Still have lots more crap to put away somewhere. Boo.

Another Singer Gone

I guess it's gonna start happening with more frequency now: losing performers I grew up with, ones no more than 10-15 years older than me who entertained me with their acting or singing. Not to discount writers or any of the above of different ages, but when it's someone who figured in your formative years, it resonates a bit more. Denny Doherty of The Mamas and the Papas has died. Cass Elliott, of course, has been long gone and Papa John Phillips died in 2001. We lost George Harrison not all that long ago, and James Brown is gone now, too. But The Mamas and the Papas was a special band, with 2 men and 2 women who combined for some of the sweetest harmonies you could ask for. Peter, Paul, and Mary were and of course, still are co-ed, but the mixed sex group concept was rare enough to be noteworthy back in the '60s. The only other group like that that comes to mind is the Fifth Dimension, another group with a sweet sound.

"Creeque Alley"
John Phillips and Michelle Gilliam)

John and Mitchie were gettin' kind of itchy
Just to leave the folk music behind;
Zal and Denny workin' for a penny
Tryin' to get a fish on the line.
In a coffee house Sebastian sat,
And after every number they'd pass the hat.
McGuinn and McGuire just a-gettin' higher in L.A.,
You know where that's at.
And no one's gettin' fat except Mama Cass.Zallie said, "Denny, you know there aren't many
Who can sing a song the way that you do; let's go south."
Denny said, Zallie, golly, don't you think that I wish
I could play guitar like you."
Zal, Denny, and Sebastian sat (at the Night Owl)
And after every number they'd pass the hat.
McGuinn and McGuire still a-gettin higher in L.A.,
You know where that's at.
And no one's gettin' fat except Mama Cass.

When Cass was a sophomore, planned to go to Swathmore
But she changed her mind one day.
Standin' on the turnpike, thumb out to hitchhike,
"Take me to New York right away."
When Denny met Cass he gave her love bumps;
Called John and Zal and that was the Mugwumps.
McGuinn and McGuire couldn't get no higher
But that's what they were aimin' at.
And no one's gettin' fat except Mama Cass.

Mugwumps, high jumps, low slumps, big bumps -
Don't you work as hard as you play.
Make up, break up, everything is shake up;
Guess it had to be that way.
Sebastian and Zal formed the 'Spoonful;
Michelle, John, and Denny gettin' very tuneful.
McGuinn and McGuire just a-catchin' fire in L.A.,
You know where that's at.
And everybody's gettin' fat except Mama Cass.

Broke, busted, disgusted, agents can't be trusted,
And Mitchie wants to go to the sea.
Cass can't make it; she says we'll have to fake it -
We knew she'd come eventually.
Greasin' on American Express cards;
Tents low rent, but keeping out the heat's hard.
Duffy's good vibrations and our imaginations
Can't go on indefinitely.
And California dreamin' is becomin' a reality...

On a lighter note, who wouldn't want an M&M avatar?

Skype Avatars

I found another place to make avatars: Skype's WeeMee. Until they catch wise and disable it, you can create an avatar, then do a screen cap to save it. You'll lose the animation, but it's better than than ominous-looking Save and Pay after you create your masterpiece. Here's mine. Wish I'd grabbed it while the little green alien guy was beaming down from his space ship. Oh well. Maybe next time. Anyway, you can change the background and accessories. There aren't many choices for clothing, but the facial expressions are decent.

New Avatar Site

Well, it's new to me. Found the link on Miwahni's LJ.

Here's what I came up with. I'm not happy about the hair, but none of the choices seemed right to me. I colored in the background in Photoshop. The site lets you use their link to display the image, but it didn't appear here, so I made a screen cap and uploaded it to my site.

Okay, So I Was a Little Bored

And made another Me Doll on Candybar Dollmaker. I thought I'd make one where me doll is dressed the way I usually am for work. I changed the hair (tho I don't usually have bangs; I keep my hair center parted) and I ended up with somewhat different facial features because I always have trouble with the eyes, nose, mouth, and head shape. But here she is and I like her as much as I like Casual Me Doll.

South Park Me?

I've been seeing this on a lot of blogs, so I had to try it. I suppose my inability to figure out how to save it with the link rather than just doing a screen cap is because I have the wrong version of Flash. Whatever. I don't actually watch "South Park." I just wanted to see what I'd look like as a character. Kinda cute, huh?

So Yasser Arafat is dead. The announcement seemed anticlimatic given his coma had been deepening for days now. Now we'll see how the mid-East will react, but I doubt it will be good. As if this year hasn't had enough turmoil and horrors.

Ashcroft's resignation was much more of a surprise. I thought he'd have to be pried from that job kicking and screaming after the NEXT election.

Apparently, the rating thing is getting competitive and weird on Blog Explosion. I pulled Occasional Blog from my BE blogs after it got a rating of one. Raters were anonymous, then named, now anonymous again, but that didn't matter. I couldn't stand seeing that "1." My other 3 blogs listed on BE have respectable average ratings, including this one, but that "1" galled me. So now I see in BE's tagboard comments folks complaining that some people are going around giving out "1" ratings as some sort of prank. BE is a lot of fun, albeit very addicting, but it just figures some uh, how can I put this delicately -- idiots -- need to be childish about things.

I haven't had much energy this week. I feel so blah. I hope things improve tomorrow -- a federal holiday so I don't have to work, though hubby does -- so I can get some writing done. Today, after I got my teeth cleaned, I came home and vegged, mostly surfing on BE. Gotta love those mystery credits.
