Labor Day Weekend

The DJs on the classic rock radio station I listen to are worked up about Tuesday and the end of summer. I get that for a lot of people, summer is effectively over come Tuesday. But since I graduated high school, the Labor Day weekend didn't mean much to me. For most of my college years, I didn't get enough credits/classes during the fall and spring semesters, so I ended up taking a summer school class for two years. When I was in grad school. I worked an hourly job that summer. Even after I joined the workforce permanently, I didn't take summer vacations, maybe just a week or two. And now I'm retired, so I don't have to worry about time off.

Summer still has three weeks to go before it relinquishes the calendar to autumn here in the northern hemisphere. It's still kinda hot. Actually, it's been hotter the end of this August than the early part of August and certainly hotter at the end of August and early September than I can recall from previous years. So, it's not like a switch is being turned and summer will suddenly be gone.

My favorite times of year are spring and fall. Spring for the few weeks of temperate weather before summer-like heat slams into us (earlier and earlier each year, thanks to climate change) and for the renewal of life: returning birds, flowers and trees blooming, more hours of sunlight. Fall for the temperate weather and.... well, that's pretty much it, actually. Fall still seems to have more temperate weeks than spring does, and for that, I'm most grateful. I could do without the shortening of daylight hours, though.

Every season has its pros and cons, and sorry, summer, much as I love you, I can do nicely without your oppressive heat and humidity.

And in the meantime, there's something I'm really looking forward to on Tuesday. That's when Stephen Colbert starts his tenure as host of The Late Show on CBS.

Short Day Blahs

I don't have full-blown seasonal affective disorder, but I do get the blahs around this time of year. It starts with going off Daylight Savings Time, when the days really start getting noticeably shorter, and continues through the first week in January when I start noticing the days really are getting longer. I have daylight bulbs for my lamps now, which helps, but it's still depressing to have to put those lamps on at 3:30 in the afternoon. So, I meant to blog, but didn't. Time kept getting away from me. Will try to do better. And now we have the first sunny day in nearly a week. That should help, too.

Bad Case of the Blahs

It used to be that fall was my favorite season. Before that, spring and fall were tied for best, but in the last decade or so, spring hasn't lived up to its rep, being too short and hot. This year, it was also nastier weather-wise, than winter was. But fall... cool, crisp days of sunshine used to rule. But not this year so far. With the exception of a day or two, fall has been nasty. Damp. Dank. Humid. Rainy. And that's got me in a funk. Which means not much to blog about. I need to get out and buy more chocolate. *sigh*

There's supposed to be sunshine tomorrow. We'll see.

Feeling: blah, duh ;)

Where Does the Time Go?

Seriously, where is it? What happened to September. There's barely a week left and it's fall already. I know I lost the summer, mostly because of my fall and hurt arm, but hubby and I did get to go away for a few days. But since we got back, time slid into overdrive and the end of the year is looming. Boy, do I want a do-over, starting with the day of that Billy Joel concert. So, the answer to the unasked question is: Yes, the arm still aches and yes, mobility is still limited, mostly in trying to move it backward. Argh.

Seasons Change

A sign the holiday season is already over: Barnes & Noble removing its Christmas decorations and already offering 2008 calendars for 50 per cent off. Nothing like rushing 2007 off the stage. Meanwhile, it's nearly 40 degrees F. Winter's coming on a bit wimpy, so far.
