Anonymous

Comment spam from Anonymous can be most entertaining. A couple of quickie reviews on my comic book blog has been getting a lot of anonymous comments. I have moderation turned on for comments, so none get published, but they're so flattering, if totally off-topic, which is difficult given the generalities. Here's one I particularly liked:

"A motivating discussion is worth comment. I do believe that you need to publish more about this subject matter,
it may not be a taboo subject but typically people don't speak about these subjects."

Literally, ninety per cent of what's posted in that blog is on the same subject matter and many, many of us blog about comics. In this case, flattery gets you nowhere.

Spammed a Lot

Comment spam just received for my photo blog. For a post that is a single photo. Of a fountain. In a building lobby.

"A person necessarily help to make significantly articles I would state. Thiss is the first time I frequented your web page and to this point?I amazed with the research you made tto make this actual submit incredible.Wonderful process!"

Plus a link. Of course.
I don't know why comment spam entertains me so. I just know that it does.

Adventures in Spam

I've blogged about this before, but to summarize: A number of people have signed up for things with my email addy. This can be problematic because I get their plane reservation info -- and one airline let me get in without a password and I had access to their seat and luggage info -- restaurant reservations, job listings, cable company bills and service call reservations, real estate listings, as well as emails from their banks, the stores where they have credit cards, and myriad other sites/places. I've gotten email from a woman trying to set me up with her friend (I answered that one and boy, was she embarrassed!), someone trying to change my password because she thought the email belonged to her uncle who couldn't log in, someone thinking I was their niece, and those are just the ones I can remember off the top of my head. I know things about some strangers that I really shouldn't have access to. And over time, I've figured the emails for tattoos, etc, were spam not intended for me, but now I'm sure because some Viagra spam has come in addressed to someone with the last name of Stafford. Yes, along with spam intended for me, I'm now getting other people's spam. And it's a bit disconcerting to know that I'm getting more email for strangers than I am for myself.

Locally Speaking

Just got this spam comment on my book review blog, on a post from November 2005! It goes thusly:

"Hi there colleagues, how is the whole thing, and what you desire to
say on the topic of this piece of writing, in my view its truly remarkable for me."

Yeah, I have no idea what the "whole thing" is, either. The post was a meme I was doing back then.

In chocolate news, I found a candy store about a half hour walk from my home, called Sugar Rush. I bought some chocolate bars. Reviews to come. Apparently, according to their Facebook page, the store is Emily's Sugar Rush. They didn't have any business cards, nor do they seem to have a website. They do have candy. And chocolate.

Random Entertainments

This bit of spam showed up in the comment moderation queue for my book review blog:

"I don't write a ton of remarks, but i did some searching and wound up here "Wear a Book Around Your Neck".
And I actually do have 2 questions for you if you do not mind.
Could it be only me or does it look like a few of the responses
look like written by brain dead visitors? :-P And, if you
are posting at other online sites, I'd like to keep up with
anything new you have to post. Could you list of the complete urls of your community sites like your Facebook page, twitter feed, or linkedin profile?"

That was followed by a link for some streaming site that I'm sure I've seen in previous comment spam. I'm a bit surprised the spammer didn't ask for my mailing address, phone number, and Social Security number, too. The post the comment queued up for was a simple link to something fun and bookish. And I'm not sure why the spambot included an insult to other commenters. That's not a good way to get a comment posted. I suppose I'm lucky, though. In the last year or so, comment spam is way down for my blogs.

Some other entertainments. I finally finished reading George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series and found this Honest Trailer for "A Game of Thrones" to be particularly fun.

Continuing on the "Game of Thrones" theme, these charts are rather funny. And these cast Q&As are fun. And then there's this, "Long Story Short." "Game of Thrones" returns for its 4th season on HBO this Sunday. If you haven't figure out by now, it's my latest obsession.

Giggle Worthy Spam

My photoblog got this spam comment today. Mind you, the post it was commenting on was a photo. Just. A. Photo. Here's the comment:

"Thanks for finally writing about > "Thursday Challenge Blue" < Liked it!"

Spammed Again

This bit of spam commenting is one of the more entertaining bits of nonsense I've gotten lately.

I really have no idea what this means. A dating service, perhaps? The fractured English seems more fractured than usual.

Spent the day with a friend taking photos of water lilies and daylilies at the NY Botanical Garden today. So many pretty flowers.

Spam that Made Me Go Huh

This spam comment really had me scratching my head.

"I was recommended this website through my cousin. I am now not certain
whether this submit is written via him as no one else understand such
certain about my difficulty. You are amazing! Thanks!"

Not much else going on. I've been trying to catch up with reading and things with varying degrees of success. At least our heat wave broke. It's just not good when it's in the 90s F. at the end of May.

Of course, there are no videos on my book blog. I haven't figured out what's the deal with the weird Ws I often see in spam comments. And of course, the spammer or spambot posts a link to a blog, which contradicts the comment, but whatever.

This gem just appeared in my Comments Moderation queue for my book blog, for a post that's 5 years old. I've left off the accompanying link this idiot or spambot wanted folks to click.

Spam I Am

I allow anonymous commenting on my book review blog, Shelly's Book Shelf, in case an author wants to comment on a review of their book, which actually happened a couple of times. I do moderate comments because most anonymous commenters are spammers. Lately, I've been rather entertained by the spam text, clearly a mangled translation of whatever the spammers intended to say. So, I decided to post my favorites here. They're not bookish, so it makes little sense to post them on the book blog.

Here's the latest (and yes, it's all one comment):

Amusing Spam

I haven't used LiveJournal much this year (I set it up to mostly discuss my efforts to become a pro writer), except to occasionally read my friends' list. The few public posts -- all the newer posts have been Friends Only -- are being hit by spam comments this past month. Usually, I get one a month, if that, but lately, it's been a few a day. As I delete the comments, I also change the post to Friends Only, so the spambots have to hit earlier and earlier. They're back in the 2007 posts now.

Normally, the spam is the usual crap: all in Russian/Cyrillic, links for Viagra and other pharmaceuticals, crap like that. But this one amused me, so I thought I'd share. It's a comment, now deleted (all anonymous comments on my LJ are screened, in a queue awaiting my moderation), on a brief post where I bemoan the death of my router, how I'm stuck using AOL dialup (!), and wishing I didn't have work the next day. Here's the comment:

"I do agree with all of the concepts you've presented in your post. They're really convincing and can certainly work. Nonetheless, the posts are too short for beginners. May you please lengthen them a bit from next time? Thanks for the post.

And Gmail helpfully shows parts of the first lines: Good day. I accidentally found a letter from you. I remember how we communicated with you. Y (it cuts off there and I didn't feel like clicking to see the rest, this was entertaining enough).

So, apparently, I not only am forgetful, but I communicated with myself before and am multiple people ("we") when I do so.

Funniest spam ever, but I'm sure someone will come along to top it. Seems to be some sort of spam contest out there.

WTF?

I just got an email, spam obviously, in my gmail account inviting me to open a gmail account. Right. That'll get me to click the damn thing. Even less so, actually, than the spam inviting me to look at a pic or video of Lindsey Lohan's breast. Is there actually anyone out there who would want to look at that? What a bore.

Shoulder still hurts, no better, no worse. Bruise on face is almost gone, tho.
