A Chocolate Post

Yeah, it's been a while since I posted anything chocolicious. I had the day off so was walking around in the East Village, one of my favorite places to take pics, after getting my weekly stack of comics, and stumbled upon a sliver of an alley off East 1st Street with one shop so far in a new building. I bought dark chocolate covered pretzel bark at Bespoke Chocolates, but I haven't tried it yet, because I also bought cookies at one of my favorite bakeries, Moishe's. So, I ate some of the cookies because they weren't sealed the way the chocolate is and were therefore, more perishable. I'll eat the rest tomorrow. As for Bespoke's chocolate, I'll report on that as soon as I taste it.

Individuality

Your Birthday's Wisdom is Individuality

Life has required you to go your own way and do your own thing.

You've been taught to rely on yourself. You don't feel comfortable relying on others.

You are highly motivated and aggressive. You have no problem getting things done and getting what you want.

You feel like you have to look out for yourself, because no one else is.

Not a bad result, actually. There's a lot of truth in this.

Meanwhile, medical test yesterday showed progress made in healing my irritated gut, but I'm not all better yet. Still, it was encouraging, pending lab results.

Fast Food

Nothing like a Blogthings quiz when I need a post.

You Are a Burger

You are a down to earth person and a straight shooter. You don't fall for fads or trends.

You are stable and a bit old fashioned. Tradition and loyalty are important to you.

You are a good friend and you like to have a good time. You find it easy to kick back.

You're not one to make waves in life. You're happy just to be a part of the fun.

Rubber Duck Week

I'm not one to brag -- okay, maybe I am -- but there's a website/social network type of site called Collectors' Quest and each week, they feature a collection of some sort, with a focus on one or a few collectors of said featured item. This week it's Rubber Ducks, and I'm one of the folks being featured. Now that's chocolicious.

Health-wise, the drugs don't seem to be working on the colitis, and there's no sign of bacteria, so it looks like more powerful drugs are in my future, ones with probable side effects. I'm not happy about that prospect. I'm not happy with the way things are now, either.

Yo Dion

Concert night. Hubby and I went to what is currently the Capital One Theater at Westbury for an oldies concert: Lou Christie and Dion.

Lou Christie
IMG_3535
Lou's act doesn't change much from show to show. We've seen him a number of times now. His falsetto isn't what it once was, but he can still sing. Women still go wild. Of course, like him, they're older now, too. I enjoy him, but hubby and I were really there for the main act: Dion.

Dion
IMG_3574
Dion, as always, gives a wonderful show. He's so natural and comfortable on stage. And he mixes up the songs he does, so you never quite hear the same thing each time. He will also do other people's songs, with his own spin. I loved his rendition of Neil Sedaka's "Calendar Girl."

On the health front, I'm hanging in there, but nothing much has changed in the last few weeks.

Mets Home Opener

Steve Says Hi From Citi FieldLast night I went to the home opener of the Mets 2009 season in their brand new stadium, Citi Field. I'd gone last Saturday, for an exhibition game, and froze my butt off, so I dressed more warmly. It did get rather chilly after the sun went down. There I was in flannel lined jeans, down jacket over a sweatshirt over a sweater top, ear muffs, and gloves. In mid-April.

The night was wonderful, even though the Mets lost. On a damn balk. Among the firsts:
Home run (by the other team, in the first at bat, by Jody Gerut, in what was the first time someone hit a first home run in a new ballpark or some such, so his bat is going to the Hall of Fame)
Mets home run (David Wright)
Broken Bat (twice)
Cat (A tabby, it leaped onto the area behind home plate apparently from the stands.)
Pinch hitter (Gary Sheffield, who didn't get his 500th home run)
Pitcher to slip and fall on the mound (Mets pitcher Mike Pelfrey)

I also got to see, and snap a couple of pics of, Frank Robinson who was in the wonderful Jackie Robinson Rotunda before the game. My pics are on flickr. The link is to the first of the night, so just keep moving forward.

Health Update the Umpteenth

I'd taken today (well, Thursday) and Friday off for Passover, but ended up with a medical appointment today. Also, as of yesterday, feeling like crap again. So, new meds, more tests to come. It was a really beautiful day out and I didn't get to enjoy it. Started reading the new Minette Walters book I'd gotten while waiting at the drugstore for my new meds. Tired of feeling like crap. Seriously.

Chillin'

Sitting here chillin' to my Pandora "Journey" station. Perfect for late night.

Counting PenniesThe theme on one of the flickr groups I'm in was "frugality" this week, so here's a shot of stormies Stan and Steve counting pennies as the Death Star has fallen on hard times, resulting in layoffs.

The financial woes have hit my workplace, too. I thought the toilet paper we had at work was the thinnest possible. I was wrong. They found something thinner/flimsier. So of course, now one needs to use 3-4 times the amount they'd normally use, maybe more. I'm already using 3 paper towels instead of one to dry my hands, thanks to paper towels that are almost as thin as the toilet paper. How this is a savings, I don't know. And while I have been bringing my own TP to work for months now (nice, double-ply, Quilted Northern), I still use what we have at work to wipe up the seat after the messy staff who precede me in the restroom. I couldn't believe how much of that flimsy paper it took to absorb all the water (I'm pretty sure it was water, no doubt dripped from wet hands because the paper towel dispenser is so close to the toilet).

On the personal front, since we still haven't gotten our raise, due last year, when the union ratified it, I've been forced to curtail my toy buying. Oh, the trauma.

Meanwhile, the Mets won their opening game, in rainy, snowy, cold Cincinnati. One and Oh. I like the sound of that. I really hope it's warmer and dry for their season opener, next Monday night, since I'll be there. I'd like to know what happened to spring. It showed up and must've not liked something, because it seems to have vanished.

I went to lunch with a friend and had a yummy cheddar omelette. The workday was busy, mostly with the sort of stuff that makes me wonder why I wanted to be a supervisor: staff issues, statistics, reports. argh.

Ah, Pandora is now playing my ringtone song: Don't Stop Believin'. Nice.

So Long, Shea, Hello, Citi Field

IMG_3023
I went to the exhibition game between the Mets and Red Sox at Citi Field today. This is a picture of the magnificent Jackie Robinson Rotunda.

Some thoughts and observations.

Much as I'll miss Shea Stadium, Citi Field is beautiful and comfy.

It was, however, too cold and windy. I was shivering down to my bones. Since the Mets were down 6-0 before batting in the first, I walked around the stadium after the third inning and took a lot of pictures.

The seats are wider and lower to the field. Because of the overhang, I couldn't see much foul territory in left field, which is the side I was on, left field just past third base.

There was nearly no toilet paper left in the stalls of the women's room I went to after the third inning. But the toilets were nicer than Shea's were and they flushed well. Given the stadium, as was Shea, is in Flushing, Queens, that's how it should be.

There are cupholders!

Potato KnishThere are lots of food choices, including the Shake Shack on the Field Level. The food lines everywhere were enormously long. There's also pizza, seafood, Nathan's, sausages, and more. I had a potato knish.

The seats past third base angle toward home plate!

You can listen to the Mets telecast in the restrooms.

You can see the field from almost anywhere in the concourses and there were plenty of monitors for while you're standing on food lines. The concourses are wider than at Shea.

There was a boutique for female fans. Like all the other shops, there was a line to get in. They were limiting how many people could crowd in the shops at a time, which was a good idea. I didn't go into any of the shops, however. I didn't want to wait on lines when I knew I wasn't going to buy anything. I'm saving that for later in the season.

The Mets lost in a game that didn't count, and their starting pitcher, Ollie Perez, pretty much sucked. Citi Field, however, is a winner.

Of Course

Your Ego is Small

You are quite humble. You try not to spend too much time congratulating yourself.

You're proud of who you are, but you're also secure. You don't need to brag.

You see yourself and others in a pretty realistic way. You appreciate strengths and faults.

You respect people and believe that you can learn from them.

Of course, I'm humble. I could've told you without this quiz, but now I have the proof. Because we all know how well constructed these Blogthings quizzes are, how precise and reliable they are. Right? ;) Now, I think I need to bask in the glory of me for a while. heh

Finale

I have a bad habit of getting hooked on shows that get canceled, but this time, unlike Invasion of a couple of seasons ago, I'm not going to be left in the lurch, as the series ends on a cliffhanger. The creative forces behind ABC's Life on Mars had enough warning to allow them to bring resolution to the drama. The ending might not have been quite as satisfying as the recent closure for Battlestar Galactica, but then, they didn't have much time for a proper build-up. However, the show, which had grown better and better each episode, and it had started great, ended on just the right note, with a bit of a surprise, some "I shoulda seen that coming" moments, and emotional moments that were heartfelt. All in all, an excellent series and an excellent ending. I'm gonna miss it. And now I want to see the original British version.

Feeling: satisfied
