Steven Wright

IMG_5162
Hubby and I saw Steven Wright perform at the Capitol One Theater at Westbury (geez, I hate that name). He's changed a bit over the years, but is as droll and odd as ever. I can't help wondering what he was like as a boy and if he drove his teachers as crazy as he says during his act.

Adventures in Shopping

The shopping gods smiled at me when I went to Macy's yesterday after picking up the 2 weeks' worth of comics waiting for me at the comics shop. And.... ta da! .... I got jeans. Two pairs, different colors of blue but same style: Style & Co's Easy Fit stretch denim petite jeans. They fit like a dream. I got some nice tops, too, different brands, but getting those jeans (they fit just below the waist) is such a relief as I had to get rid of most of the pairs I had that became too big.

Feeling: not bad

Of a Sensitive Nature

You Are Medium-Skinned

You can be sensitive at times, but that's totally normal.

Your sensitivity means you can be empathetic and compassionate, even if you're a bit thin-skinned.

You take what people think into account but you try not to let it get to you.

It's hard not to take things personally, but you do your best.

I'm home, and to celebrate, I took this quiz. The results are fairly accurate.

Feeling: okay

MediaWest*Con Report 2

Friday, the con officially opened and as I'd mentioned last time dinner was the RRG (Rowdy Restaurant Gang -- there are 6 of us) Party at The Outback. We exchange gifts, celebrating all our birthdays at once, and generally have a fun, loud time. The waitress was great, really getting into the spirit of things, as the Outback wait staff usually does for these "meetings."

Saturday, we went to Grumpy's for breakfast again. Friday, I had the yummy cinnamon French toast, and this time, I had eggs and toast. I spent part of the afternoon shopping at the room dealers, of which there were few this year. I also took pics of the door decorations, which were rather sparse. So we didn't do the Saturday night "hall crawl" as a group because there wasn't enough to warrant it as an activity. Instead, we ate dinner and relaxed.

Sunday, I slept in and played online until the afternoon. I joined J for dinner, then we went to the art auction. The usual fun and hilarity ensued, and rather risque, at that, as usual. Let's just say that some of the art is not rated G or PG, and few (or none) of us are prudes. I won 2 of the little clay critters I'd bid on during the art show (pics later, because they're securely packed for the trip home). After, J, 4 other friends, and I went to a place called Steak and Shake for snacks. I had a Frisco slider (burger with Thousand Island dressing) and a chocolate shake (that could have had been more chocolate-y). But fun was had, which is what really matters.

Monday, I spent time with J at her table in the Dealers' Room, then we said our goodbyes, had lunch with another friend at Boston Market, and hit the road. We stayed over in Pennsylvania for the night and got back to J's late afternoon. To make up for the "not a cloud in the sky the entire trip" going out, we had rain all the way back today.

We're already thinking about next year's con.

MediaWest*Con Report 1

MediaWest*Con 2009 Door Decoration

We made great time on Wednesday and arrived at 8 pm to find: no pool, no outdoor courtyard, and the restaurant manager, Richard, no longer working there. This means no sitting outside taking pictures, no Saturday night pool party, and a decided decrease in food quality at the hotel's restaurant.

We did find a nice park on Thursday and spent a couple of hours there walking around. We found the diner where Richard is now employed and have had breakfast there twice so far. Last night was our annual dinner at the Outback (6 of us) and I tried the terryaki steak which was excellent. A group of us went to see Star Trek on Thursday, which was awesome.

Mature Survey

I did one of these a while back, and don't recall if these were the same questions.

Tired of all of those surveys made up by high school kids? Have you ever kissed someone? Missed someone? Told someone you loved them? Drank alcohol? Here you have 39 questions for the people who are a little older...

1. What bill do you hate paying the most?
Hubby pays most of the bills, but I just hate spending the money! I want it all for free! Bwahahaha!

2. Where was the last place you had a romantic dinner?
We don't do romantic dinners, per se. And we haven't eaten out since our trip to Maine last summer.

3. What do you really want to be doing right now?
Out taking pics, or at the movies, or just enjoying the day instead of sitting here coughing.

4. How many colleges did you attend?
Two, one for undergrad and one for grad degree.

5. Why did you choose the shirt that you have on right now?
It's the ratty old shirt I leave out to wear at home.

6. What are your thoughts on gas prices?
I don't drive so I don't know what they are right now.

7. First thought when the alarm went off this morning?
Not a work day, so no alarm.

8. Last thought before going to sleep last night?
I have no clue. Maybe all the stuff I need to do before going away on Tuesday.

9. Do you miss being a child?
No.

10. What errand/chore do you despise?
Cleaning bathrooms.

11. Get up early or sleep in?
Sleep in, after going to bed late.

12. Have you found real love yet?
I sure hope so, since I'm married.

13. Favorite lunch meat?
hmmmm.... does hamburger count?

14. What do you get every time you go into Target?
I can honestly say I've been in Targets, but it's not a store I shop in.

15. Beach or lake?
Either.

16. Do you think marriage is an outdated ritual?
No.

17. Sopranos or Desperate Housewives?
Neither.

18. What famous person would you like to have dinner with?
I have no clue. Maybe the president so I can have dinner at the White House. That would be cool, but I think he doesn't need to be there. I'd love to sit and chat with Michelle Obama.

19. Have you ever crashed your vehicle?
I don't drive. I did fall off a bike a few times.

20. Ever had to use a fire extinguisher for its intended purpose?
No.

21. Ring tone?
"Don't Stop Believin'" -- Journey.

22. Strangest place you have ever brushed your teeth?
How strange is a bathroom at sleepaway camp?

23. Somewhere in California you've never been and would like to go?
North of San Francisco, maybe. I've been to California a lot, covering most of what I wanted to see there.

24. Do you go to church?
No. Don't go to shul, either.

25. At this point in your life would you rather start a new career or a new relationship?
Career, but really, it'd be more like just a job at this point.

26. How old are you?
55 for another week or so.

27. Do you have a go-to person?
Well, there's hubby...

28. Are you where you want to be in life?
Not where I'd planned to be, but it's fine.

29. Growing up, what were your favorite cartoons?
Rocky and Bullwinkle, Daffy Duck, The Flintstones.

30. What about you do you think has changed the most?
I'm more social now.

31. Looking back at high school were they the best years of your life?
No.

32.Are there times you still feel like a kid?
Lots of times. I cultivate the feeling. I don't ever want to fully grow up. That's so boring.

33. Did you ever own troll dolls?
*sigh* Yeah. I had a big one, and a couple of regular size ones. I hated them then and I hate them now, but I still have a tiny one, with trimmed hair.

34. Did you have a pager?
No.

35. Where was the hang out spot when you were a teenager?
No one told me. My friends and I hung out on the stoop or in each other's backyards.

36. Were you the type of kid you would want your children to hang out with?
Yeah, why not?

37. Who do you think impacted your life the most?
I got my values from my parents, so they had the most impact.

38. Was there a teacher or authority figure that stood out for you?
There was Mr. A. He was my 9th grade homeroom/science teacher and I stayed friendly with him til he died when I was in high school. I'd help him at the afterschool center at my neighborhood public school.

39. Do you tell stories that start with “when I was your age”?
Only to freak out younger people who can't believe there was a time before computers. ;)

I Have a Cold

I Have a Cold

Well, either a cold or allergies run amok. I'm so congested and I can't get this f'in child-proof bottle open. I'm waiting for hubby to come home from the ballgame, which went into extra innings. It really serves no purpose if the sick person can't access the damn meds. So, I'm sick and I'm frustrated and I'm annoyed.

Feeling: yucky

IMG_4607Hubby and I went to the Mets game yesterday and saw them win, which was a nice change of pace for me. I've been starting to feel like a jinx. Then they went and lost tonight, while we were home. Make of that what you will.

Meanwhile, what I thought was allergies seems to be more cold-like, with stuffed nose and congestion and scratchy throat and mild fever. Not fun, but a decent excuse for a hot chocolate.

A couple of days ago, a friend and I tried that chocolate pretzel bark I picked up at Bespoke Chocolates. Talk about a real hit of cocoa. Wow. That's about my limit. And they left the salt on the pretzel, so there was the dark chocolate bitterness with the salty pretzel. Intriguing, but not something I can eat a lot of at once.

Feeling: stuffed up

Teen Idols at Westbury

IMG_4449Two of my favorite oldies performers and a third singer I haven't seen on stage before performed at what is currently the Capitol One Theater at Westbury in what they billed as the Teen Idols: Mark Lindsay (from Paul Revere and the Raiders' fame), Micky Dolenz (of the Monkees), and Peter Noone (Herman of Herman's Hermits).

Mark Lindsay's voice might not be what it once was, but the old Raiders songs sounded great and it was good to see him on stage. Micky and Peter were in great form, too, and the evening was loads of fun. I'd thought this would be 3 separate acts performing, but the three guys had formed an act for the night: The Teen Idols, and did the opening and closing numbers together. The picture (l to r: Mark, Peter, Micky) here is from the closing number. In between, they each got to perform individually, with the other two sitting in the orchestra, singing backup.

As usual, Peter was the highlight for me. He does voices and impressions (and he snuck in his dead-on Johnny Cash) and I don't think there's anyone who can work an audience and has the rapport with folks that he has. He is charm personified, and very funny. With Micky and Mark there, there was a lot of direct banter. All three focused on Top 10 hits, and the audience was really into it. There was a meet and greet session after, but I have work tomorrow, so hubby and I couldn't stay.

IMG_4384And, sitting two rows behind us was one of my favorite DJs: Jim Kerr of WAXQ 104.3. During the intermission, I leaned over and got his attention and got to shake his hand. I've been waking up to him for hmmm... three years now (or maybe 4? I've lost track), so that was a thrill.

Good Day

Wage and Ox Enjoy the DayAn actual nice day off despite an early eye doctor appointment (all was well), chilly temps, and an overcast sky after overnight rain. But I felt the best I have in weeks, and was able to walk around the Upper East Side taking pictures for 2 hours. Which means I've been spamming my flickr contacts again. Or rather, as usual.

No chocolate, though.

Feeling: pretty good for once

Once Upon a Blog

Somehow, while I wasn't paying attention, I passed my 5 Years of Blogging Anniversary. That was in March. In March 2004, I started blogging (I don't count the LiveJournal I started in the fall of 2003, because I used it for about a month.), first with AOL Journals, then soon after on Blogger and LiveJournal (under a second account because I'd forgotten the login info for the first). The first Cyber Chocolate was that AOL blog and this one was Cyber Chocolate Junior, started that summer for things (javascript memes, etc) that I couldn't post on AOL (which didn't accept javascript). After a year or thereabouts, I switched CC and CC Jr and this one here on Blogger became the Main Shelly Blog. The AOL version is long gone and now, so are AOL Journals.

This place could use a bit of freshening up, but I won't think about that until the summer. Meanwhile, I'm being cautiously optimistic that I'm actually a bit better health-wise. And busy trying to get things done before my vacation in two weeks.

Feeling: okay
