Public Service Announcement

Quote of the Day:
"Nothing is really work unless you would rather be doing something else."
- James M. Barrie
That's certainly true, for me, anyway.

Today's PSA (Maybe I should make this an irregular regular feature) has to do with faxing:
I know faxing is such a cheap, easy thing to do, people think nothing of it, especially not of all the ink cartridges and paper used on the other end, so no need to leave comments informing me about that.

A few pointers, though, for any of you reading this who might be considering spam faxing (spaxing?)....
  1. Don't fax an original on colored paper. I'm assuming that's why the library is receiving flyers that have gray backgrounds. They're largely unreadable and those for posting won't be posted.
  2. Don't fax color text originals. They don't print out well.
  3. Include a phone number we can call to let you know you faxed something to the wrong place. Cover letters go a long way to help alleviate this problem. Wish we could do that when someone's trying to fax to an actual phone line, but there's no communication possible with a beeping fax machine. Which leads to the next item.
  4. Research, research, research. Double check the fax number of the place you're faxing and after you punch it in. Don't assume it's going where you think it is.
  5. Research where you're sending your faxes to make sure they're appropriate. This is especially true for resumes. Resumes for people seeking teaching positions that are faxed to libraries is not going to get the job seeker anywhere. Even for appropriate jobs, finding out where to fax a resume is a good idea. Big city library systems such as ours have a separate personnel department located in a different building. I am intrigued by many that come in, though. I smiled at the one with the goal of finding a "challenging and rewarding position as a Custodial Maintenance Worker," because we all know how rewarding cleaning toilets can be. And it certainly is a challenge most times.
It's frustrating, though, when paper is used up in the fax, so legit faxes don't get through. At least we now have a machine that stores messages until paper is added to the tray. And we're recycling the wasted paper. My computer printer has no problem with reusing that paper, so it's not fully wasted, but it is an annoyance.
