Cupcakes

Made some chocolate cupcakes from a mix today, then got lazy and dumped the rest of the batter into a loaf pan. Duncan Hines Chocolate Fudge mix and Pillsbury ready-made icing. Yum.

Icing the Cupcakes
The loaf is in the fridge, un-iced. I'll do that once the cupcakes are all eaten.

Joy of Cupcakes

Caught! 9/52
Babo Caught Eating My Cupcake

I've long heard about Crumbs Bake Shop and have wanted to try their cupcakes, but being rather lazy, I never got around to heading over to Crumbs. But Crumbs, evidently tired of waiting for me to go to it, decided to come to me, and opened a store mere blocks from my workplace.

Pictured is a Squiggle cupcake. They have names. They have calorie counts posted! This large cupcake -- and they're all, pretty much, large -- was around 530 calories, if my memory is trustworthy. The cupcakes ranged from 350 or so calories to well over 500.

This was tasty. There's vanilla icing inside, making this similar to a Hostess cupcake or a Drake's Cake, only better. However, this was not as good as the cupcakes I recall fondly from childhood and have, over the years, occasionally rediscovered. I like plain devil's food cake with a thick, swirly, buttercream icing on top. Filling is nice but not required. The cake was moist but could have been moister/richer. The icing was yummy, but missing something, too similar, perhaps, to the mass produced packaged cupcakes one gets in the grocery store. I dunno. I liked it, but I'm glad I hadn't gone out of my way to get it.

Holiday Cupcake

A colleague brought a batch of these into work today. Not chocolate (the cake part is yellow), but yummy, none the less.

When is a Cupcake Not a Cupcake

IMG_4556
I saw this black and white cupcake in Zaro's in Grand Central Station today and it looked so yummy that I had to try it. It seemed to be a no-brainer. I love Black and White cookies and I love cupcakes. But the cupcake was more like a dryish muffin. The vanilla and chocolate icing top was decent. Not something I'd buy again.

Feeling: Disappointed

Cupcake Chocoliciousness

IMG_3777I went to a local Duane Reade drugstore to pick up some cough syrup. It's a new store in a brand new building, and much cooler inside than outside (where it was hovering around 100 degrees F.), so I wandered the aisles for a bit and discovered these yummy looking goodies. I've always loved Entemann's, so figured I'd give these a try.

They look a lot like Hostess Cupcakes, and it appears Entemann's is going after the Hostess/Drake's Cakes crowd, but these don't have the chemical flavor of Hostess and they are moister than Drake's (if that's possible). I recommend them. They were quite yummy.
