I got hit by a foul ball that caught the back of my head on the rebound. We get quite a few foul balls where our seats are, but it's been a few years since one has come directly at me. I ducked and it went over my head, but the row behind me was empty, so the ball caught either the concrete floor or the seat and bounced right up to the base of my head. It hurt a little, but not too much. I heard some kid shout that he got the ball, but I figure as the injured party, I should've gotten to keep it. I honestly have no idea where it ended up, though somewhere behind me for sure, and I doubt anyone knew I'd been hit. Ah well. At least the Mets managed to win despite two players leaving with injuries. Nothing is ever easy with the Mets.

It was a great day at the ballpark, and the Mets have their team colors for sprinkles at the Mr. Softee concession.

It was really hot, and the ice cream melted a lot faster than I would've liked, dripping everywhere. But on a hot day, it was just the cold treat I needed.

Mets Win!

Yup, baseball has returned after its winter hiatus! Was rather chilly at Citi Field, but the Mets eked out a 1-0 win over the Braves, and Johan Santana was back pitching after missing 19 months following arm surgery, which made for a warm, fuzzy feeling.

But no first hotdog of the season for me. Still recovering from a stomach upset of sorts that hit me Tuesday night -- at least this time, I have an excuse for missing a few days of blogging. Been a while since I was last sick, and I hope I'm never that kind of sick again. Bleh.

Play Ball

Went to Mets Home Opener. And really, if I managed to sit through the entire game freezing my butt off (including the coldest toilet seat I've ever used when I visited the ladies' restroom), the least the Mets could've done was win the damn game.

I did manage to eat my first hotdog and fries of the season.

A Peek Inside

Hubby and I got to go on behind-the-scenes tour of Citi Field, home of the Mets today. The team was doing this for full season ticket holders and it was quite fun. We got to go onto the field, into the dugout, and as you can see from this photo, into the Mets' locker room. The only thing missing was the Mets!

Baseball season can't come fast enough. I hope the Mets manage to field a better team this coming season, one that stays healthy.

Touching Second

Hubby and I went to the last Mets game of the season, a nice 4-0 shutout that reminded us that the season held so much promise before everything fell apart. After, we got to walk around the field with hundreds of other people. Here I step on second base. And now, in our usual refrain, "wait til next year!"

1969

It was a magic year.The Jets won the Super Bowl, though I didn't follow football back then. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon, which had my parents and I (I don't think my sister cared much) enthralled in front of the TV. There was a big rock concert in upstate New York called Woodstock. And the Mets, improbably won the World Series. Last night, hubby and I went to Citi Field for a game (the Mets lost) and an opening ceremony honoring the 1969 team. Most of them attended and Tom Seaver spoke on behalf of his teammates. He wasn't nicknamed Tom Terrific and The Franchise for nothing. It was very cool.

Hazy, Hot, and Humid Equals Win

Day off. Got my hair cut, then went to the Mets game with a friend. It was brutally hot and humid, the first real 3-H (hazy, hot, humid) day this summer. The Mets won in a rout 9-0, but lost 2 more players to injuries. Really, it's getting way out of hand now.

Take Me Out to the Ballgame

Hubby and I went to the Mets game today. The sun came out, unexpectedly, but then it rained, a deluge of water, and since the Mets were losing at that point, we left. They did resume the game after we left, and the Mets lost. Still, a good time was had. I had my first hotdog since before I got sick last November, along with a potato knish, and I took pics (with my point & shoot, because I was not taking the new dslr to the ballpark with rain in the forecast).

Mets Home Opener

Last night I went to the home opener of the Mets 2009 season in their brand new stadium, Citi Field. I'd gone last Saturday, for an exhibition game, and froze my butt off, so I dressed more warmly. It did get rather chilly after the sun went down. There I was in flannel lined jeans, down jacket over a sweatshirt over a sweater top, ear muffs, and gloves. In mid-April.

The night was wonderful, even though the Mets lost. On a damn balk. Among the firsts:
Home run (by the other team, in the first at bat, by Jody Gerut, in what was the first time someone hit a first home run in a new ballpark or some such, so his bat is going to the Hall of Fame)
Mets home run (David Wright)
Broken Bat (twice)
Cat (A tabby, it leaped onto the area behind home plate apparently from the stands.)
Pinch hitter (Gary Sheffield, who didn't get his 500th home run)
Pitcher to slip and fall on the mound (Mets pitcher Mike Pelfrey)

I also got to see, and snap a couple of pics of, Frank Robinson who was in the wonderful Jackie Robinson Rotunda before the game. My pics are on flickr. The link is to the first of the night, so just keep moving forward.

So Long, Shea, Hello, Citi Field

I went to the exhibition game between the Mets and Red Sox at Citi Field today. This is a picture of the magnificent Jackie Robinson Rotunda.

Some thoughts and observations.

Much as I'll miss Shea Stadium, Citi Field is beautiful and comfy.

It was, however, too cold and windy. I was shivering down to my bones. Since the Mets were down 6-0 before batting in the first, I walked around the stadium after the third inning and took a lot of pictures.

The seats are wider and lower to the field. Because of the overhang, I couldn't see much foul territory in left field, which is the side I was on, left field just past third base.

There was nearly no toilet paper left in the stalls of the women's room I went to after the third inning. But the toilets were nicer than Shea's were and they flushed well. Given the stadium, as was Shea, is in Flushing, Queens, that's how it should be.

There are cupholders!

There are lots of food choices, including the Shake Shack on the Field Level. The food lines everywhere were enormously long. There's also pizza, seafood, Nathan's, sausages, and more. I had a potato knish.

You can listen to the Mets telecast in the restrooms.

You can see the field from almost anywhere in the concourses and there were plenty of monitors for while you're standing on food lines. The concourses are wider than at Shea.

There was a boutique for female fans. Like all the other shops, there was a line to get in. They were limiting how many people could crowd in the shops at a time, which was a good idea. I didn't go into any of the shops, however. I didn't want to wait on lines when I knew I wasn't going to buy anything. I'm saving that for later in the season.

The Mets lost in a game that didn't count, and their starting pitcher, Ollie Perez, pretty much sucked. Citi Field, however, is a winner.

Shea Goodbye

Hubby and I went to closing day at Shea Stadium. We'd hoped the Mets would win and be able to extend their season into the playoffs, but that wasn't to be. But the ceremony after the game was wonderful, with over 40 former players and coaches returning to wish Shea farewell. It'll be torn down soon and the new Citi Field opens next spring. I filmed a video of the very last pitch at the end of the ceremony, and with luck, it will play.

It's Not Easy Being a Mets Fan

Sometimes, they just tear your heart out. After falling behind by a lot last night, they almost staged a remarkable comeback in the bottom of the ninth, only to fall one run short.

Tonight, behind a rookie pitcher starting his first game in the majors, they were looking good, til it fell apart in the 5th inning and now they're down by a run.

I really want to be going to playoff games this fall, but their pitching has to improve a hundred-fold for that to happen. feh

I'm just not in the mood to blog about fun stuff today.

Mets Mania

Please forgive the lapse into sports blogging here. But this article in the NY Daily News about Mother Nature taking care of the Mets is pretty funny. And here's a building that went blue and orange, the Mets colors, in support of its team. If the Mets win the National League championship series, and even, dare I dream, the World Series, I may need to make a Metsolicious mood icon. heh

Nice Day for a Long Walk

Felt pretty good today, best in a while. And it was a really nice day, sunny with a brisk, autumn chill, so hubby and I went to Flushing Meadows Corona Park, site of the 1964-65 NY World's Fair. We walked down to the Unisphere and then over to Shea Stadium where we looked at the mound of dirt in the parking lot where the new stadium will be built. I've been wanting to get over to the park to take photos.

This time capsule one is entertaining, the things we all thought would be worth preserving. There was another for the 1939 World's Fair, but I didn't get a photo of that. I like the "irradiated seeds."

Dexter, on Showtime, continues to entertain. It has quickly become must-see tv for me. I even switched from the Mets game to watch it. Hubby kept giving me updates as the Mets scored runs.

This is that weird weather time of year (there's one in the spring, one in the fall) when it's warm enough for a mid-day malted and cool enough at night for a nice, soothing hot chocolate. Yes, I had one of each beverage today.

And to cap the day, the Mets even their playoff series with a 12 - 5 win over the Cardinals. :)

Cue Deep Sigh

Quick entry before my laptop's battery dies. The other isn't charged. The PC which has the modem for the wireless network needs to be plugged in for me to have internet access on the laptop, but I don't like plugging them into the same power strip, especially since the one the PC was plugged in shorted out. Well, not the strip but the actual outlet died. The electric system in this building was not designed for 21st century appliances.

Feeling: because the METS won their series and the Yankees LOST theirs.

"The Team, the Time, the Title"

Make note. The NY Mets are now officially the National League Champions, 9/18/06.

I've been a bad blogger here. Been feeling a bit out of sorts the last day or so and am hoping another doctor's visit isn't in order. And I've been distracted with making icons for LiveJournal, catching up on reading comics, and watching the Mets. It was nail-biting time over the weekend as the Mets dropped a series to the Pirates, but winning the division title in front of the home fans is very sweet. And a long time coming.
