By the Way Redux

I posted previously about By the Way Bakery. I had tried the gluten-free chocolate chip cookie. My second visit, just before Passover, was to try the chocolate chocolate chip cookie. It was a bit chewier than the chocolate chip variety, almost like a brownie, and as tasty. They do use rich chocolate.

I found this bakery on Manhattan's Upper East Side, called "by the way Bakery." BTW Bakery advertises itself as gluten free, dairy free, and kosher. It uses really good chocolate, too. They had small samples of fudge and I gave that a try. So chocolatey rich. I bought a couple of chocolate chip cookies to eat at home, though I ate one while walking and taking photos in that neighborhood. The cookies were very tasty and chewy, but not more chewy than others I've had that were made with the usual ingredients. No delivery or mail order, but I'll definitely make some return visits.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

While I'm a total Oreos addict, and therefore, can't keep them in my home (I could eat a box a night that way), I also have a great love for chocolate chip cookies, so when these showed up in a gift basket, I had great anticipation.

One Small Chocolate Chip Cookie

These cookies from Lily O'Brien's were okay, perfectly fine, actually. But not... they were not great. I expect greatness from chocolate chip cookies. Aside from home made, I currently love Linden's Chocolate Chippers, especially for the bite-size variety cookie. Lily O'Brien's cookies didn't have the same crispness, the same overall chocolate quotient of goodness. So, not a cookie I would seek out, but if another package came my way, I'd probably eat the contents.

Cookies for the Win

Been dealing with all sorts of nonsense lately, including a couple of annoying medical issues (nothing serious) and a leaky bathroom ceiling. So until I can come up with some real content, enjoy some yummy chocolate chip cookies, at least vicariously. They're small cookies, from my favorite kosher bakery, Moishe's Bake Shop.

Tale of Two Cookies

Today was a chocolate chip cookie day.

It started when I was walking around taking photos and got hungry. The First Street Garden in Manhattan's East Village has a MUD kiosk, so I bought a large chocolate chip cookie. Regrettably, I ate it before I thought to take a photo of it. It was a mix of crunchy and chewy, with delicious, melted chocolate chips, the melting of which might be due to the temperature hitting the 70s F.

I continued walking and happened upon a small bakery called Sweet Generation where I bought a large chocolate chip cookie. This one was paler, and not as sweet, which leads me to think they don't use dark brown sugar. The cookie was crunchier than MUD's, though the center was somewhat gooey. It was tasty yet very different than MUD's. The story of the bake shop is a fascinating one, too, growing out of the owners involvement with arts education.

I'm constantly amazed at how different two cookies of the same type can be. Chocolate chip cookies are so basic, yet the recipes, and therefore, taste, vary greatly.

Five Star Cookies

Some yummy chocolate bakery cookies to see us into the weekend. From Moishe's, one of my favorite bakeries. The sandwich cookies are filled with jam. One had raspberry jam, but I ate these so fast I can't remember what the other jam was.

Sweetness

I love walking around the borough of Manhattan in NYC, taking photos and finding cool shops and food places. Hudson Street and 8th Avenue, just below West 14th Street, are becoming a chocoholic's dream. First, on 8th Avenue, there's Chocolate Bar. Then, across 8th Avenue, there's Li-Lac Chocolates where you can get neat chocolate items such as chocolate shoes and chocolate elephants. And now I've found, a few block south from there, on Hudson Street, Sweet Corner Bakeshop. I tried this chocolate chip cookie (what I usually get when available when trying a new chocolate shop) and it was yummy. The chocolate stayed melty when I ate the cookie later in the day, and the cookie was a perfect combo of crunchy and chewy. I'll be going back for more.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

I got a couple of chocolate chip cookies from Epicure Boulud a couple of days ago. They looked so yummy. However, though they were tasty, they were disappointing, especially since they weren't cheap, considering their size. They were a bit bland, and the chocolate didn't seem dark enough. It didn't taste like milk chocolate, but just didn't have the richness I was expecting.

Sweetness

Liddabit Sweets is a Brooklyn-based candy company that specializes in handmade chocolate and confections.

I picked up a cookie 2-pack from The Good Batch at one of NYC's pop-up holiday markets in the park, in this case, the Union Square Park Holiday Market. The cookies in question are the Chocolate Royale. The Good Batch is a Brooklyn-based bakery. I'll admit that I had them a few days before trying them -- I had other chocolate to eat first! -- but upon taste testing, they still were amazing. I don't know if the consistency is the same it would be when they're fresh, but they seemed to have the consistency of dried cake or a brownie, while not feeling stale. They were very chocolatey, most decadent as the label promises.

And They Are Lactose Free

Impulse buy while at the supermarket. These cookies, from a bakery called Oberlander that obviously supplies supermarkets, looked rather yummy, so I figured I'd give them a try. And they were rather tasty. I don't need lactose-free food, but it's good that not having lactose can still mean tasty cookies. Might have to try gluten-free next.

Lip Smacking Good

I was wandering around the theater district yesterday, taking advantage of an absolutely gorgeous day, one with a deep blue sky and crisp, cool, late summer air, just looking around and taking pictures, when I started getting a bit hungry. Thinking I could get a marble pound loaf from Starbucks, one of my addictions, I was looking for a Starbucks, which is usually not difficult to find, when I spotted a place called Schmackary's, with a giant cookie on the sign. Intrigued, I went in.

The menu extends beyond cookies, to my delight. I wasn't very hungry, so I passed on the malted, but I did try a classic chocolate chip cookie. I can happily report that it was a chocolicious delight. A bit crunchy, a bit chewy, a bit salty, and very chocolatey. As you can see in the photos below, the cookie was loading with yummy chocolate chips. I will definitely be going back.

They sell coffee beans, tee-shirts, and mugs online, but no cookies, sorry. But if you're in NYC, especially the theater district, head west on 45th Street, and before you reach 9th Avenue, you'll be in cookie heaven.

Chanukah Cookies

Hubby found Chanukah cookies. The box and varied cookie shapes bring to mind Animal Crackers and that ilk of buttery goodness, but alas, these were not close to that league. They had a bit of a kick, but the flavor was just weird. They look good, though.
